Upcoming Summer Movies

It’s summer. So you know that the season of the big action summer blockbusters are here. I will list a few of the more exciting ones here, that I think will be good to watch or just funny.

X-men 3 : The Last Stand. US release : 26 May
With the departure of director Bryan Singer to Superman returns, can this third x-men movie survive the box-office ? Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon), certainly hopes so. Unfortunately, with a much increased cast, which includes newcomers, Kelsey Grammer’s blue-furred beast, Ben Foster’s Angel, Vinnie Jones’ Juggernaut and others you would expect a long movie. But in order to rush it out for this year’s release, the movie is only about a 100 minutes long. The trailers looks good though, so let’s hope that this will be the best movie of the three.

Cars US release : 9 June
Pixar is back with a new animated feature. Owen Wilson is a sports car racing across the country to take part in a race. However, getting caught for speeding in a small town, he had to do community service as a punishment. During the course of his stay, he will learn that there is more to life than fame, winning and racing. Also starring the voices of Paul Newman and Bonnie Hunt.

Miami Vice US release 28 July
Remember the pastel colours and the electronic synthesizers ? Yes, the 80’s television hit Miami Vice is back. Director Michael Mann (the original series creator) is back with Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx and Gong Li ? The series was always about style more than substance, so I would expect the movie to be more popcorn fluff than anything. However, Michael Mann has directed some interesting movies lately, so this will be interesting. I wonder when they are going to make an A-Team movie.

Click US release 23 June
Adam Sandler is an ordinary joe with the ability to manipulate time with the help of a magic remote control. He can fast forward his wife’s nagging, slow-mo the jogging of his well-endowed neighbor and pause time to manipulate events. Now where can I get this remote ?

Superman Returns US release 30 June
Bryan Singer left the x-men franchise to direct the return of Superman to the big screen. Brandon Routh takes over from Christopher Reeve as the movie Superman, but he looks kind of wimpy to me. The storyline is somewhat strange too, with Superman returning after a long absence to find that life and Lois moving on without him. It does not look like your typical Superman big action movie, but I think that Kevin Spacey would make a great Lex Luthor.

Pirates of The Carribean : Dead Man’s Chest US release 7 July
Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly are back. It’s going to be fun and silly and maybe Singapore would get mentioned again. Just leave your brains at the entrance and enjoy this silly romp. And get ready for the third part, which will have Chow Yuen Fatt as the villain.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend US release 21 July
How do you break up with a superhero girlfriend, who could snap you in half ? This is the premise of Ivan Reitman’s comedy. Starring Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman, it could be the When Harry Met Sally of the superhero genre.

The Lady in the Water US release 21 July
When a building manager rescues a mysterious lady, he discovers that she is a narf, a character from a bedtime story. The building tenants and him soon realize that they too are part of the fable as they protect the fragile creature from other malevolent creatures from the story. Directed by M Night Shaymalan, can they see dead people ? Or are they aliens ? You can bet that there will be a twist at the end of the story and that people will be guessing what it is.

World Trade Center US release 9 Aug
Oliver Stone, Nicolas Cage, Maria Bello join forces to tell what might be the first big blockbuster about 911. This is the true story of two Port Authority police officers who rushed in the twin towers during September 11 to rescue people, but were trapped inside themselves.

Zoom US release 11 Aug
Another superhero comedy movie ? This time Tim Allen stars as a retired superhero ‘Zoom’, who returns to duty when asked to teach at a school for young superheroes in training. Also stars Courtney Cox.

DOA : Dead or Alive US release 25 Aug
Ok, is this going to bomb or what ? Based on the video game, which was about scantily clad babes fighting each other and their interesting physics, will this movie be any different ? Will we have a plot ? Can fanboy traffic generate a profit ?

Marvel : Civil War #1

War ! What is it good for ? In Marvel Civil War #1, absolutely everything.

Civil War is Marvel's summer blockbuster multi title crossover event. And from the first issue, it looks like it's going to be a big hit.

Without spoiling too much, something happens to someone and then something big happens and then something else happens.

Just kidding.

Seriously, if you ever wondered why super heroes can run around saving the world, causing untold amounts of damage and possibly some deaths, without the authorities so much as batting an eyelid, Civil War will answer that question for you.

During a reality show, a group of superheros were trying to take down a group of baddies. However, the result was a huge explosion which killed the majority of said superheros, as well as a group of school kids. This incident prompted the US goverment to serious considered a new law, the SuperPowers Registration Act.

The Act (details still mushy), requires any marvel character with super powers to register with the Government and SHIELD. and if they desire to continue with 'crimefighting' activities, to become part of SHIELD as authorised agents. Sort of like super cops.

The super hero community is split in 2 over this issue. (Civil War get it ?) Captain America is against the act as he feels it is against freedom and choice, while Iron Man is for the act as he believes that super heros should be held responsible for their actions.

While this issue is basically setting up the scene for the whole series, it still had quite a few action scenes to up the excitement. Overall, it served it's objective of explaining to the reader the situation the heros are at and to whet the appetite for future issues, including the cross overs. If what marvel is saying is true, that there will be major repecussions from Civil War, it looks like Marvel readers will be in for an exciting year ahead !
